I have test OS's for this & other purposes.

As soon as the new version is released to everyone, I get a new beta. I don't run Windows Defender myself, though I do beta test the next version of MSE for MS.

It is possibly unfair to either organisations, to compare a full fledged Security program with a basic Anti virus (Defender) product? I am happy to use Defender, but would only dare rate it against such free offerings as AVG and Avast, etc. * ( Or a wife and a mistress ) !!! Unless you are a Mormon or a Muslim there will probably be trouble in the home !!! With Norton protection doing all of the heavy lifting, Windows D & F are spectators just taking up space and causing headaches. If you're not happy with Norton maybe try Kaspersky software.Īctually you are probably fighting windmills like Don Quixote in the Spanish novel, persisting in trying to make Windows Defender and Firewall work simultaneously with Norton. Your computer will begin acting up, running slower and bogging down, become increasingly non-responsive over time. If it's the Russians you will be getting mysterious E-mails using your name. Now it's the choice: Have the Russian scammers compromised your security or has Norton taken it over? Or both. My computer said: Your security has been taken over by an outside vendor *( Norton ). So - you don't actually need Windows Defender and Firewall if you have Norton.

In my book Windows 8 Step by Step, it says Windows Defender and Firewall are the best FREE protection but if you want better protection then outside vendor software is better.

In Microsoft's last go round they discontinued Defender back in the Vista or Windows 7 era. I don't know how old your compute is or what type, desk top, laptop, or it's history. Apparently installed some vendor software that cleansed systems. They took over my computer remotely and whizzed around for over 45 minutes. It cost me $169 for a 1 year subscription. So in frustration I hired GuruAid a Connecticut based specialty outfit *( With Indian techs ) and they found the problem. I ran Norton scans and they did detect lots of malware, data miners and so on. My Windows firewall, in my Windows 7 wasn't responding. One has been caught, others are still at large.

The photos, testimonials and website are all false creations. Only problem is that the Canadian Company is a fraud, a scam, it doesn't exist. Then they use my stolen E-mail to send out a website link to a Canadian Company that sells medication on line. The best info is that there are some bandit Russians off shore hacking into steal E-mail addresses. You may not be happy to hear this but I suffered a similar problem this year with my 2 year old HP Pavilion desk top using windows 7. I uninstalled MalwareBytes / SuperAntiVirus software and nay, Windows Defender will not be turned on.Ĭan someone on this happy forum please give me the secret of turning this thing on - the secret is about as secretive as getting the caramilk into the caramilk bars!!! I've even gone against the grain and completely uninstalled / removed Norton 360 and guess what - Windows Defender still won't come one. The next door neighbours dog cannot do it. Windows 8 Defender won't turn on.Ī Microsoft Agent could not do it. Here's a new question that has not been mentioned on any of the forums before. If you're going to run Defender, then davehc's advise above applies.

So if you're going to run Norton 360 on Windows 8, forget about Windows Defender. Not to mention that protection would suffer, neither would properly work.

Windows Defender that ships with 8 is a total AV/AM app, if it weren't to shut off when another first line of defense installed, there would be a serious clash going on, plus resource usage would run through the ceiling. On those, Defender may play well with Norton 360. From Windows 7 down through XP, Windows Defender is simply a spyware app, a second line of defense.

Windows Defender on Windows 8 is an entirely different product than what ships with Windows 7 (& possibly Vista), & is an optional download for XP. Windows Defender will shut down is another app such as Norton is installed. But Norton 360 is a first line defense, so is Windows Defender on Windows 8. One other thing, MalwareBytes & SuperAntiSpyware plays well with Windows Defender, as they're second line defenses.
